Sad state of affairs
Canada’s parliament came under attack yesterday from what appears to be a lone gunman, who launched two separate attacks within blocks of each other and then was killed. Although the main parliamentary building was full of MPs for weekly caucus meetings, no one was injured. The prime minister and opposition leaders were all reported safe. But a soldier standing guard at the nearby Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, where the first shooting took place, died of his injuries.
Sad day all around. You hear about this happening elsewhere in the world smug in the thought that it would never happen here . . . and then it does.
Class assignment
I have a class assignment to come up with some musical audition songs to learn and I’ve been looking for something more contemporary to learn.
There’s an awful lot of good material out there that I’ve never heard of.I came across this one called Run Away With Me from the musical The Unauthorized Autobiography of Samantha Brown written by Kait Kerrigan and Brian Lowdermilk.
The show is set at dawn on the day that Samantha Brown is supposed to leave for college, she is sitting in her car but can’t turn the keys. She is filled with doubts and the show is told through a series of flashbacks from her senior year as Sam comes to terms with her parents expectations, her first love and a lost friendship.
This love song is sung by Sam’s boyfriend Adam as he tries to get her to run away with him.
- Those Darned Squirrels
Old Man Fookwire is a grump who only likes to paint pictures of birds that visit his backyard. The problem is, they fly south every winter, leaving him sad and lonely. So he decides to get them to stay by putting up beautiful birdfeeders filled with seeds and berries. Unfortunately, the squirrels like the treats, too, and make a daring raid on the feeders. The conflict escalates-until the birds depart (as usual), and the squirrels come up with a plan that charms the old grump.My take: How can you not like a book where you get to say Googlie Mooglie, raise your fist and yell “Those darned squirrels”?
