Sam isn't speaking yet but he certainly is trying. This past week he's figured out how to put his boots on and he very proudly puts on his little yellow boots and tramps around the house in them. Most mornings I get a funny sounding "Bye!" and a wave as I'm heading out the door to work.

Hazel has shown interest in trying out the beaten-up tricycle the neighbors gave us now that the weather has turned warmer. At first she could only go downhill and needed help with a good push coming back up the street. She got frustrated very easily and would stamp her feet and say "I do not like this!" whenever she couldn't figure out whether to push forward or back with her feet on an incline. But over the past couple of weeks she's gotten much better and she really only needs a nudge now when she hits a big curb. She's even ridden her tricycle all the way to the library where she exclaimed to Aline "My feet are tired!"
No more biting PDF Print E-mail

As retold by Aline: Hazel was teasing Sam (which she denies) so he bit her. She left the room closing the door on her way out and told Sam he was in a time out then she went to her room. He eventually followed her and I heard her come out and say to him . . . "Do you know what I didn't like about what you did? You bit me and that is not a nice thing to do. Never ever ever ever do that again."

Short Story

Every spring my wife laments the forest of maple trees in our backyard and how their roots and shade will affect our little garden plot.

This year she decided to embrace them instead.

Here comes the sun PDF Print E-mail

Week two of our inaugural maple syrup run is looking good. Too good.

I see with both enthusiasm and alarm that the high for the next three days will be 10 degrees. That's going to do great things for our sap production which seems to be a little more than 2 litres per tree per day. But we've already reached the limits of our storage capacity. We need more containers to store the sap. More burners to boil the sap. And more pots to put the sap in.

We've reached a classic business conundrum. Our anticipated maple syrup savings are being wiped out by our growing capital investment costs.

Business sucks.

Sunday, 07 March 2010 14:20

Every spring, summer and fall Aline laments the amount of shade we have in our backyard and how poorly it affects the garden harvest. Well this year we've decided to embrace the trees and suck some of their life force out of them .... we are making maple syrup. Every spring, summer and fall Aline laments the amount of shade we have and how poorly it affects the garden harvest. Well this year we've decided to embrace the trees and suck some of their life force out of them .... we are making maple syrup.

Aline's dad came over on the weekend with some unused buckets, lids and spigots and we've tapped 10 trees. The upcoming week is supposed to be above zero so we'll know soon enough how our backyard operation will fare.

Sam is finally getting the idea of what a potty is for. Until recently he's been far too busy to actually stay seated on a potty for even 10 seconds but we had a breakthrough today as he had a successful dump all on his own.
