After being second last as far back as February, my hockey team made a great run in March and seesawed with the leader in April and won our earl of Sussex hockey pool for 2011:

A nighttime first PDF Print E-mail

I was reading a story to Hazel at bedtime tonight and Aline was putting Sam to sleep and I could hear the little guy crying out for me for the first time. Talk about role reversal. He never wants me to put him to bed.

I say no! PDF Print E-mail

Not surprisingly, Sam doesn't seem to like raspberries on his belly button (or zerberts as we affectionately refer to them) anymore than his sister. That doesn't stop me from administering them.

The typical exchange goes like this. I grab the little guy and ask him if he'd like a zerbert. And he starts shrieking in glee:

I say no!

Last year's inaugural backyard sugar shack was a success so we're ramping up production for season two. We received 10 new buckets from Aline's folks as a Christmas present and we purchased five more of our own so we have 15 buckets ready to go this year . . .

Email from Aline:

He is dressed up as a unicorn right now and he is giggling very happily. Is this better than a tutu or just as bad? Should we invest in some boy dress up clothing?

I'm thinking† - yes.

How the dinosaurs died PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 01 March 2011 19:00

Hazel and Sam are sitting in the hallway looking at a book:

Hazel: The dinosaurs all died

Sam: Why?

Hazel: Because a big rock came and it got colder and colder and colder and colder and the dinosaurs didn't like the cold.

Sam: Why?

Hazel: Because a big rock came and it got colder and . . .

Sam: Why?

{Pause as they flip through some pages}

Hazel: Which one is your favorite?

Sam: {non-intelligible answer}

Hazel: This one is a meat eater . . . let's go to your room.

Burnt fingers PDF Print E-mail

It had to happen eventually.

Aline was on the phone with her mom and Sam reached up and touched a hot stove.

He burnt his left palm, thumb, index and middle finger. And then the screaming began. Poor little guy.

Aline says he cried pretty hard for the first half hour and screamed at one point when she tried to bring him to the kitchen. Eventually he calmed down enough and fell asleep at naptime and she put his hand in a bowl of cold water. By suppertime he seemed OK and was fine with showing off his hand to me. It doesnít look too bad.

Sweet ride PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 20 February 2011 23:00

Itís Family Day and Hazel has woken Sam and I up from a nap. She decides the bed is a car and slips her stubby little legs between the slats at the footboard and starts driving us to visit our friends Pam and Doug and their two daughters Lili and Dorie. Itís a nice ride.

I ask about our car and am told it's white speed car with rainbow tires and a bed in the backseat. Itís also a gas guzzler though as Hazel stops numerous times on the way to fill up. Fortunately, the price of gas is cheap. I ask her after the fifth fill up how much sheís spent and the answer is six cents. Itís a long ride so we stop for some food. Tim Hortonís of course. And she brings Sam and I a lunch tray of vegetables. Cost? $100.

Not interested in a birthday party? PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 19 February 2011 19:00

Hazel has been invited to Danicaís birthday party next month. Sheís not interested. The moment we brought it up and she understood that Sam, mum and I wouldnít be there she got very quiet and told us she didnít want to go. Later, she told me she was scared to go alone.

Wonder how long this will last?
