Hazel is starting to sing. Before she would just shout loudly but she's starting to get a melody occasionally and making up her own songs. If I could only remember the words . . .

Sam is starting to wave his hands. I wouldn't say he's actually waving at you yet - but the motion is starting to happen.

Little Sam climbed up the stairs today for the first time. Not once. Not twice. But on three separate occasions. Aline says that when he made it up to the top the first time - he giggled with glee.

It's lunchtime and Hazel hasn't finished her plate but wants to go and play - which she's not supposed to do until she's finished eating.

Aline: If I go over and look will I see an empty plate?
Hazel: Yes . . . (5 seconds later) . . Don't go look.

Little Sam fell asleep in the baby swing this morning while Aline was gardening and I was checking on laundry. As I was coming upstairs and out to the deck I could see he was leaning over precariously close to falling. And then he tipped further. Both Aline and I rushed over and caught the swing before he slid out.

Crisis averted.

(Though Aline wants it noted for the record that she didn't know I had popped inside and would have been watching him more closely if she had known I wasn't there.)

Shortly afterwards, I'm lying in the hammock beneath guarding him and the hammock falls.

Aline says: Oh, it's you. I thought it was Sam.

After a minute, she asks: Are you OK?

It's clear that I'm number four on the depth chart of love around here.

The stench of microwaved brussel sprouts was floating through the air this evening so I told Aline she should bake a cake to freshen the atmosphere. The following conversation ensued:

Aline: You'll have to buy me a new cake pan.
Steve: Hazel, should we take some money out of your allowance to buy mummy a cake pan?
Hazel: No!
Steve: Hazel, should daddy pay for the cake pan?
Hazel: No!
Steve: Hazel, should mummy pay for the cake pan?
Hazel: Yes!

Aline and I enjoy watching CBC's Triple Sensation because during the audition stage we sometimes see a few people we recognize from the Ottawa arts scene. This year contestants included Leah Cogan who played the title role in the 2004 Orpheus Musical Society production of Annie Get Your Gun.

Leah made it through the auditions into the show and last night she won the first place prize of scholarship money to attend any performing arts school of her choice.

Congratulations Leah!
