Cycling
Tuesday, 20 July 2010 20:00

I've had a sneaking suspicion my bike times have been slower ever since I had a flat tire last year and replaced the flat 1.25 width tire with a slightly larger 1.5 city slicker.

This weekend I bought some 1.1/8 Gator Skins at Bushtukah and tried them out on my work commute for the first time.

Holy cow! What a difference. I posted my best time ever heading to work with a time of 28:35 and averaged 29.39 kph. I'm pretty sure I can hit 30 kph and get under 27 minutes on the ride home if the stoplights and wind don't slow me down . . .

Hazel and I went shopping for a new life jacket today and as usual she wanted to try the bikes. usually, I have to help her and she gets frustrated as she hasn't figured out that pushing backwards on a pedal causes braking. This time she chose a pale blue bike with training wheels and was doing figure eights in the store on her own . . .

Family camping on the Gatineau River PDF Print E-mail
Canoe Routes

Aline and I have been wanting to give the kids their first taste of camping this summer so with good weather forecasts on the horizon and a lower than normal bug season thus far, we chose this Canada Day long weekend to go camping near her parent?s cabin on the Gatineau River.

Suppertime!
JG and I scouted out a nearly ideal campsite a short 15 minute paddle away from the dock on a secluded island and after claiming it for ourselves with a tent, Aline and I returned with the kids in tow later that afternoon.

Hazel immediately set about tossing sticks in the water and Sam copied her while Aline and I set up camp. The tent site was lumpy and we had no sunset view but otherwise the site was perfect. A shallow wading area for kids. Decent rock ledge to sit on. Trees for our hammock. A cool breeze and virtually no bothersome bugs.

Not having a bathroom didn?t faze the kids. Sam discovered leaning over the hammock gave him a good position for an easy to clean number two. Hazel found great glee in counting the ants who invaded her potty after a pee.

Sam was ravenous and foraged through our cooler for snacks while we prepared corn followed by cheese and macaroni for dinner testing out our new wood burning Vital Stove for the first time. Eager to see it in action, I nearly caused a forest fire as pine needles caught fire outside the stove forcing us to hastily beat the flames back. It was an impressive display of heat caused by a small battery powered fan which fed the flames in the stove and pretty much incinerated any dry material you gave it.

Aline?s folks paddled over to join us for a smores dessert which Sam smeared all over his face. He was easy to clean and the kids then played pretend canoe before Hazel waded into the water searching for clam shells with JG.
Bedtime came with sundown. Aline stood by the water rocking Sam to sleep while I told Hazel some of her favourite bedtime stories doing my best not to forget the storylines ? unsuccessfully. With Sam successfully asleep, Aline took over and retold Hazel the story of our day leading up to bedtime.

Performances
Friday, 25 June 2010 19:00
If you ever wondered how the TV show Friends might be if it had Fozzie Bear and Miss Piggy arguing about their one-night stand, but with more angst, expletives and full-on puppet sex - then go see Avenue Q.

The 2003 Tony Award winning musical came to Ottawa this summer and Aline's folks treated us to tickets as an anniversary present.

Earthquake! PDF Print E-mail
Newsflash
Tuesday, 22 June 2010 19:00
It's 1:45 PM and I'm at work on the 18th floor of Place Bell Tower when the floor starts shaking for about 20 seconds. It rumbled for about 10 seconds and then trembled for another 10.

Half an hour later reports indicate that a strong earthquake rattled Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec Wednesday. The epicentre of the quake was at Val des Bois, Que., according the the United States Geological Survey. The quake measured 5.5 and occurred at a depth of 19 kilometres, the USGS said.

Unofficial reports at work imply that our colleague Eric T had a little too much to eat at Ribfest for lunch and was exercising with some jumping jacks . . .

Hazel
Friday, 18 June 2010 19:00
Every night at bedtime, we let Sam and Hazel watch a few DVD cartoons before bed. Usually Hazel and I negotiate how many she gets to watch. As you might suspect, she wants lots and I restrict her to a few.

Tonight for the first time her negotiation tactic was to tell me she loved me with a winning smile.

I didn't fall for it.

Vacations
Thursday, 10 June 2010 19:00
Aline and I were married on this day five years ago. It's amazing how quickly that time has passed and what's transpired in between: selling our downtown condo and buying a new house. Countless little renovations to make the place truly ours. Two beautiful kids that haven?t yet learnt the comforts of sleeping in. Canoe trips. Musicals. Starting our own garden patch and maple syrup sugar shack.

On serious reflection, they've been happy years that I'll treasure always and as I penned Aline a little love letter, getting her a KitchenAid mixer when I proposed was the smartest thing I ever did.

To celeberate we went down to Gananoque for dinner and a show and an overnight stay.

I know we're not supposed to let children play with their food but you can't help but laugh when you hear the following:

Sam
Saturday, 29 May 2010 19:00
Aline is off on a girls only weekend leaving me alone with both kids for . . . for the first time. Wisely I kept Same up a little later Saturday night so that he slept in till 6:30 AM Sunday morning for me. I heard him begin to protest his jail cell then and Hazel went to investigate while I pulled the covers over my ears. She came back to tell me that Sam wants 'Down'. After breakfast I told Hazel we would play hide and seek. I hid in bed. The kids found me. And sadly didn't understand the game change to Let Sleeping Dogs Lie. Or Dead Jungle Gym. Or Don't Poke A Dead Man.
