Friends of ours gave us a gift certificate for Taj Indian Cuisine Restaurant near the Coliseum movie theater as a wedding gift almost two years ago. Lucky for us ? it hasn?t expired and we took advantage of my mum being in town to babysit Hazel to go out for a sit-down lunch date.

Until this past year's Christmas parade in downtown Ottawa, Aline and I had never heard of the Garlic King. But a guy who wears a purple robe, wears a crown and drives around in a minivan setup like a Popemobile is hard to miss.

And when he's doing all this to advertise his Lebanese restaurant Really Lebanese Food, well, that's hard to forget.

ImageWhile looking up things to do for our 1000 Islands getaway last weekend, Aline and I discovered that the Kingston Symphony Orchestra would be playing an outdoor concert featuring a performance of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture with cannons fired by the Fort Henry Guard and a fireworks finale at the Fort Henry National Historic Site July 21-22. That sounded pretty cool to us especially since it gave us an excuse to check out a stone house for sale near Brockville on the way down and to eat at Chez Piggy in Kingston prior to the show.

It's been a year since Aline and I visited The Basil Leaf on Somerset for dinner. And it looks like we should have come more often than we did because as we strolled through Chinatown tonight, we started questioning ourselves about its location. Didn't there used to be a stairwell leading down to a basement restaurant adorned in bamboo near the Kowloon market? Or was it further down the street?

You see, we couldn't find it.

When we finally did all that was left of the place was a boarded up unlit door. Bummer. We'll miss it. Think Coriander Thai at half the price.
